Tupelo - William “Andy” Mercer passed away at the age of 71 on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at his home. He was born to the late William E. Mercer and Julia A. Moore Mercer on September 1, 1954. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and brother. He will be missed deeply by his family that he adored and cherished.
Andy will be remembered for his infectious personality and the genuine warmth he shared with everyone he met—he truly never met a stranger. Selfless and steadfast, he was always ready to lend a helping hand, offering comfort, encouragement, and unwavering support to those in need. His kindness and welcoming spirit left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He was a devoted member of Riverbend Baptist Church and, later in life, faithfully attended Becker Baptist Church, where he continued to grow in his faith and fellowship.
After more than 20 years of dedicated service, Andy retired as a Sergeant with the Tupelo Fire Department. His commitment to serving others did not end with retirement; he continued answering the call through his work with the Becker-Athens Volunteer Fire Department. Throughout his distinguished career, Andy continually sought to better himself in order to better serve others, earning numerous certifications and honors. Among his many accomplishments were his Paramedic Certification, Volunteer Firefighter Certification, Department of Defense Certification, Wildlife Certification, and many others. His life was a testament to dedication, courage, and an unwavering desire to help others.
He is survived by his children, Precious Kalie Mercer, and Chanda Mercer and her fiancé, Dustin Whitzell; grandchildren, Deklin Gordon, and Kai Gordon; two brothers; three sisters; and a host of nieces and nephews, and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Drew Mercer; and granddaughter, Gillian Gordon.
