Pontotoc – Thomas “Tommy” Lester Cox, 68, passed away Monday, June 1, 2026, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. Born in San Antonio, Texas, on November 20, 1957, he was the son of the late Thomas B. Cox and Arline Mary Cox.
Tommy was known as the family historian, the one everyone turned to whenever a question arose about family history, stories, or connections. He had a remarkable memory and took pride in preserving those memories for generations.
At the age of 18, Tommy answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Marine Corps, where he proudly completed three terms of service. Following his military years, he spent much of his career as a long-haul truck driver, dedicating countless hours on the road and often being away from home for weeks at a time.
Tommy enjoyed NASCAR, collecting guns and knives, and spending time tinkering with his truck, a hobby he loved but found more difficult to enjoy as his health declined. Though he spent much of his time independently, Tommy valued every opportunity to connect with others. Whether in person or over the phone, conversations with him were memorable. He always had a story to tell and never lacked for words.
Tommy will be remembered for his service, his knowledge of family history, his love of conversation, and the unique presence he brought to those who knew him.
He is survived by his sisters, Kathy Hutcheson (Steven) of Missouri, Patti Karambis (Larry) of Houston, Texas, Judy White of Abilene, Texas, Debi Knight (Tom) of San Antonio, Texas, and Teri Howard of San Antonio, Texas; friend of 40 plus years, Mike Gish (Teresa); and friend, Joyce Smith of Mississippi.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas B. Cox and Arline Mary Cox; and a sister, Barbara Cox.
A graveside service with military honors will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 15, 2026, at the Corinth National Cemetery, 1551 Horton St, Corinth, Mississippi 38834. Pegues Funeral Directors have been entrusted with the care of Tommy’s arrangements.
