Sara Ruth Miller Simmons, age 86, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 9, 2025 surrounded by her loved ones. She was born April 14, 1939 in the Birmingham Ridge Community, the beloved daughter, of Ara and Herman Miller. She grew up in Saltillo and graduated from Saltillo High School.
Sara married Gill Simmons on August 17, 1958 and together they built a life filled with love and family. She was a devoted mother to Marcus Gill Simmons, Dana Denise Haguewood, and Robin Renee Simmons, now deceased. Her love, guidance, and warmth shaped their lives in countless ways.
She will be remembered for her kindness, resilience, and generosity. For years she touched the lives of the many children she cared for at Jone and Sara’s Learn and Play School from 1970 until 1978. She also assisted with special needs children at Lawhon Elementary School for six years.
Sara is survived by her husband, Gill Simmons; son, Marcus Gill Simmons; daughter, Dana Denise Haguewood (Scott); granddaughters, Simmons Renee Haadsma (David) and Sara Scott Harrelson (Austin); and great-grandchildren, David Kent Haadsma III, Miller Louise Haadsma, and George Scott Haadsma.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ara and Herman Miller; her sister, Charlene Harris; her brothers, Witt Miller and Grady Miller; and her daughter, Robin Simmons
Visitation will be 1 until 2:30 p.m. Friday, December 12, 2025 at Pegues, Tupelo. A celebration of Sara’s life will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Jefferson Street Chapel with Dr. Forrest Sheffield officiating. Private burial will follow in Lee Memorial Park.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Tupelo Sunsets.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the M. G. Simmons Ability to Succeed Scholarship at Itawamba Community College, 602 W. Hill St., Fulton MS 38843; or Parkgate Pregnancy Clinic, 150 S. Industrial Road, Tupelo MS 38801.
Sara’s love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
