VERONA - Sammie Burleson, 73, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a long illness. She was born July 4, 1932, in Lee County to Sam Thomas Young and Flora Pettigrew Young, who preceded her in death. She had lived in Verona for the past 62 years. She was a 1948 graduate of Verona High School. She was retired from the Tombigbee Electric Power Association after 30 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Verona, where she served on various committees and boards supporting the church ministry. She was a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program. She thoroughly enjoyed her Thursday's pie party with her family. She was the widow of John Morris Burleson, who died in 1966.


Services were Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church in Verona with the Rev. Buddy Smith officiating and the Rev. Don Sparks assisting. Burial was in Lee Memorial Park.


Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Burleson of Benton, Ark.; one son, John Burleson of Benton, Ark.; three sisters, Patsy Bass and Lowery of Tupelo, Martha Miller of Brewer, and Mary Goff and Bobby of Verona; one brother, Joe Young of Nettleton; four grandchildren, Crysta Burleson of Verona, Derek Burleson of Tupelo, and Jared Burleson and Andrey Burleson, both of Saltillo; two neighbors and special friends, Bud and Judy Gilmore.


Pallbearers were Larry Bass, Bobby Joe Young, Jeff Goff, Lee Miller, Scott Martin, Guy Weeks, Bill Collins, Ken McVay and Ben Parker.


Visitation was held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and from 10:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the funeral home and from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
