Richard Estes passed away at the age of 76 at the Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. He was born October 31, 1949, to the late O’Neal Estes and Evie Lou Waycaster Estes.
Richard was a quiet man whose laughter and smile could light up any room. While he didn’t always say much, his presence brought joy and comfort to everyone who knew him. His family affectionately called him “Papa Rich” or “Paw,” names that reflected the warmth and love he shared so freely with those nearest to his heart.
Richard had a playful spirit and was always looking for a way to lovingly aggravate someone, especially his grandchildren, turning every moment into a fond memory. He cherished the simple pleasures of life, particularly spending time outdoors. Whether he was casting a line while fishing or enjoying the peaceful rhythms of a hunting trip, Richard felt most at home in nature.
He proudly served his country through the Mississippi National Guard, a reserve force committed to supporting both state and national missions in times of need. His dedication reflected his strong sense of duty and love for his community and nation. His desire to serve led him to become a cherished member of the Richmond Volunteer Fire Department.
Richard’s life was defined by his quiet strength, gentle humor, and unwavering devotion to family. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to know him.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Janet Estes; children, Kim Price and her husband Joe, Jennifer Barber and her husband, Dusty; step children, Bridgett Martin, Amy Bonds and her husband Greg, Megan Stembridge, and Cody Stembridge; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews and other family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Linda Owens; step-daughter, Kellie McCombs Gann; grandson, Cooper Barber; and great-grandson, Eli Whitaker-Hogue.
A memorial service honoring the life of Richard Estes will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 24, 2026, at Richmond Pentecostal Church with Bro. Ricky Pierce officiating. Pegues Funeral Directors have been entrusted with the care of Richard’s arrangements.
