Mickey Akers

Tupelo, MS — Mickey Akers, a devoted servant of God, a bedrock of his community, and genuinely one of the finest people to ever grace this world, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2026, at the age of 76.

Born in Tupelo on February 18, 1950, Mickey was part of the Tupelo High School’s celebrated Class of 1968, being selected as Mr. Tupelo High School. He attended Ole Miss, was a Sigma Nu, and began his life-long fandom of Ole Miss sports. After college, he returned to Tupelo and began his career in sales. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Tupelo, where he served as an usher and volunteered with the Backpacks for Kids program.

Mickey lived a life deeply rooted in his Christian faith. His walk with Christ was evident in everything he did – from the quiet grace with which he handled life’s challenges to the boundless kindness he extended to everyone he met. He was a man of profound integrity, unwavering strength, and a gentle spirit that brought warmth to every room. You never saw him without a smile on his face.

Above all else, “Pops” was a loving and devoted family man. His family was his greatest joy and his proudest achievement. He poured his heart into caring for them, leaving them cherished memories of laughter and unconditional love that will guide them for generations to come. To know him was to love him, and his absence leaves a void that can only be filled by the beautiful promise of eternal life.

He is survived by his wife, Libba. They married in 1973, and he was lucky to spend the next 53 years with his soulmate. Through better or worse, richer or poorer, and in sickness or in health, they shared a truly remarkable love. Other survivors include his son, Jason and his wife, Laura, of New Orleans; daughter, Lindsay Tomlinson of Madison; grandchildren Alexis and Jess Akers and Elaine Tomlinson; and several nieces and nephews. His three grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he never missed a chance to talk about their accomplishments or tell others how he loved them.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Elaine Akers; brothers, Murray Akers and Deke Akers; and sister, Martha he never knew.

Mickey’s family is incredibly grateful for the care and compassion he received from Sanctuary Hospice House in his final days.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Friday, July 24, 2026, at the First United Methodist Church Tupelo.

A funeral service celebrating Mickey’s life will be at 12 p.m. Friday, July 24, 2026, at the First United Methodist Church Tupelo with Rev. Keith Keeton and Rev. Jim Curtis officiating. Pegues Funeral Directors have been entrusted with the care of his arrangements.

Jimmy Ivy, James Riley Hunter, David Anthony, Bubba Worthen, Joe Bell, Jimmy Vail, and Jack Phipps will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

Mickey hated to wear a necktie, so one of his final wishes was that no ties are to be worn at his memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, Mickey’s family requests that memorials be made to Sanctuary Hospice House, P.O. Box 2177, Tupelo, MS, 38803, or Tupelo First United Methodist Church’s Beds for Kids Program, P.O. Box 854, Tupelo, MS, 38802. The family further encourages everyone to live a life of kindness and joy like Pops did.

As God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. – Colossians 3:12-14.
