Tupelo - Mary “Missa” Oates Jalette, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family at North Mississippi Medical Center on October 24, 2026. Born on August 26, 1953, in Maryland, Mary brought light and laughter to all who knew her.
Mary and JJ married on October 28, 1977, in Jacksonville, Florida, and shared 44 years of marriage before his passing in 2021, building a family rooted in love, laughter, and courage. Mary dedicated much of her life to nurturing her family, staying home to raise her children during their formative years. In 2015, she joined the Walmart family, where she worked for approximately eight years. She was avid cooking show enthusiast, but nothing compared to spending time with her grandbabies. Her world revolved around her grandchildren. Known lovingly as “Gina” and “Grandma,” she wore those names with pride.
Mary was known for her twisted sense of humor, quick wit, and ability to say exactly what was on her mind, no matter the time or place. Beneath that bold spirit was a heart of gold and unwavering strength. She was your biggest fan, always ready to cheer you on and stand in your corner. Her signature shrimp Rotel and chicken salad will forever bring memories of her to the table.
Mary was truly one of a kind. To know her was to love her. Our hearts will forever long for one more laugh, one more phone call, and one more hug. We will always miss her standing beneath the porch light, blowing kisses as we pulled away.
Until we see each other again, we’ll carry your love with us always.
Mary is survived by her loving children, Jason Anthony Jalette of Tupelo, Kathleen Jalette Hastings (Shannon) of Oxford, and Julia Ann Jalette of Okolona; eight grandchildren, Kamryn, Greyson, Trisha, JP, Mia, Teslynn, Junior, and Lila; and two great-grandchildren, Messiah James and Jalani Dior.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary E. Smith; and her devoted husband, Jimmy Jalette.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the special people at NMMC who fought alongside and cared for her throughout her journey. In accordance with her wishes, no service will be held, and the family will celebrate her life together. Pegues Funeral Directors have been entrusted with the care of Mrs. Mary’s arrangements.
