New Albany - Lanier “Pete” Young, 84, a beloved and hard working husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, entered the gates of Heaven to meet his Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. He was born on Wednesday, April 30, 1941, in Waterford, Mississippi, to the late Ernest and Mabel Young.

His life became a testament to his unwavering faith in Christ, and he had a deep love for his family and had an appreciation for laughter. Lanier dedicated thirty years to the Coca-Cola Bottling Company. He worked in several areas within the company but especially enjoyed when his work involved special events at Ole Miss. His strong work ethic continued even after he retired from Coca-Cola. After only 6 months of retirement, he began another ten years of service with The Sears Company in Tupelo.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joy; his two daughters, Karen Johnson (John) and Gayle Pannell (Rodney); four grandchildren, Garrett Johnson, Reverend Beth Roper (Davis), Victoria Lavanway (Greg) and Morgan Shoffner (Jeffrey); and five great-grandchildren who affectionately knew him as “Papa Pete”.

Lanier’s legacy will continue in the hearts of his family and friends. He touched so many with his constant love, kindness, generosity, and steadfast support. He will be profoundly missed by everyone who had the absolute privilege of knowing and loving him.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Pegues, Tupelo.

A Celebration of Life honoring Lanier will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of Pegues Funeral Directors with Bro. Gary Gray officiating. Graveside service will follow at Tupelo Memorial Park.
