NettletonJohn Joseph "Joe Raper, 71, died Tuesday, September 27, 2005, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a lengthy illness. An Itawamba County native, he was born November 30, 1933, to the late Rev. Samuel Jackson "Bro. Jack Raper and Beatrice Dean Raper. He previously worked for Rockwell International for over eleven years and W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors for over 20 years. After retiring from W. E. Pegues, he owned and operated V.I.P. Transport Services for five years. He was a member of Richmond Pentecostal Church. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was known for his enjoyment of good food and story telling.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday in the Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Gerald Sawyer officiating. Burial will be in Andrews Chapel Cemetery.

Survivors include one son, Rev. Samuel John "Sammy Raper and wife, Julie Oliver Raper, of Nettleton; one granddaughter, Talitha Armendy Raper of Nettleton; three step-daughters, Ouida Allred of Pensacola, Fla., Debbie Wright and husband, Paul, of Plantersville, and Teresa McMillan and husband, David, of Tupelo; one step-son, Donnie Green and wife, Kay, of Clinton; two sisters, Freddie Pierce of the Evergreen Community and Becky McAlister and husband, Rev. John McAlister, of Tupelo; four brothers, Rev. John "Ben Raper and wife, Charlotte, of Tupelo, Buck Raper and his wife, Deborah, of Corinth, Harvey Raper and his wife, Martha, of Evergreen, and Dan Raper and his wife Brenda, of Evergreen; nine step-grandchildren, six step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mildred Annie Raper, and a step-daughter, Darlene Young.

Pallbearers will be Donald Mills, Lamar Ashley, Bobby Holman, Paul Creely, Roger Dean, and Frank Humble.

Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Barnett Jr., Rick Tucker, Bobby Kent, Leon Rhudy, Wayne Rhudy, Roy Foster Sr., Roger Fields, and the staff of W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors.

Visitation will be 5 - 9 p.m. Thursday at the Funeral Home on Jefferson Street.
