Mooreville—John Thomas Estes, Sr. passed away Sunday, August 30, 2026 at the North Mississippi Medical Center. John was 91 years old. Born in Lee County on October 31, 1934, he was the son of Selma Faye Shumpert Estes and Mannie Evans Estes, the youngest of nine. John was a lifelong resident of Mooreville and a member of Boguefala Baptist Church. He attended Mooreville High School where he played basketball. He left high School to join the army. He was a military police officer in Germany. After his honorable discharge, he attended Itawamba Junior college. He was a 32nd degree Mason at the Richmond Lodge and a Shriner. John will be remembered for his strong work ethic and his kindness to all who knew him.
John leaves behind his children, John Thomas “Tommy” Estes, Jr. of Oxford, Teresa Estes Steele of Eggville, and David Alan Estes Sr. (Melissa) of Tremont; grandchildren, Alan Estes (Tiffany), Justin Estes (Laura), Steven Estes (Alyssa), and Daniel Steele (Samantha); 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; the mother of his children, JoAnn Estes; as well as many nieces and nephews that he loved.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sandra Gail Estes; three brothers; and five sisters.
Service time is still incomplete but will be held at Boguefala Baptist Church. We will celebrate John’s life with a small family and friend memorial. Pegues Funeral Directors has been honored to assist with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital
