Tupelo – James Leo Segars, age 89, passed away on Friday, August 1, 2025, while in hospice at North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born on April 6, 1936, to Elisha and Edna Segars in Amory, MS. James was a devoted husband to his wife of 69 years, Glenda Segars. He earned an associate’s degree from Freed-Hardeman University, a Bachelor of Arts from Delta State University, and two Master of Arts degrees, one from Harding University and another from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Even into his 80s, James remained dedicated to learning, actively pursuing a Doctorate in History.
Throughout his life, James ministered the Word of God through numerous churches as Minister of the Church of Christ in Leland, MS, Church of Christ in Belmont, MS, Central Church of Christ in Gasden, AL, West Main Church of Christ in Tupelo, and Lee Acres Church of Christ in Tupelo. Through his servant ministry, he also founded the Dayspring Television Program which he ministered with for over 20 years. He also taught Bible, History, and Ethics for over 20 years with the Itawamba Community College. Later in life, he was a member of Gloster Street Church of Christ in Tupelo where he served as Elder for over 25 years.
He is survived by his wife, Glenda Roby Segars; three children, James Lee Segars and wife, Tonya, of Olive Branch; Dr. Amy Price and husband, Arnold, of Tupelo; and Mark Lynn Segars and wife, Cindy, of Florence, AL; seven grandchildren, Gary Segars of Olive Branch; Kyle Segars and wife, Stephanie, of Olive Branch; Ben Price and wife, Alyssa, of Stephensville, TX; Shelby Price Buskirk and husband, Trey, of Tupelo; Hanna Kenner and husband, Steven, of Hoboken, NJ; Sam Segars and wife, Paige, of Florence, AL; and Sadie Segars of Nashville, TN; and one brother, Doug Segars and wife, Kathy, of Greenwood.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be 5 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at Pegues, Tupelo and 10 a.m. until service time on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at North Gloster Street Church of Christ.
Services honoring James’s life will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at North Gloster Street Church of Christ with Minister Chad Ramsey, Mr. Terry Smith, and Mr. Russ Crosswhite officiating. Graveside services will follow at Amory Masonic Cemetery. Pegues Funeral Directors are entrusted with the care of his arrangements.
Pallbearers will be Joey Spearman, Jimmy Keith, Branyon Johnson, Paul Callens, Johnny Rasberry, and Donnie Hamiln.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dayspring Television Program at North Gloster Street Church of Christ.
