James "Buddy" Harris

Tupelo - James "Buddy" Harris, 83, of Tupelo, passed away peacefully late Sunday evening, September 20, 2026, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. Buddy was born on Monday, March 8, 1943, in East Tupelo, Mississippi, to James V. Harris, Sr. and Modena Burleson Harris.

A gifted football player in his youth, Buddy was selected to play in the High School All-Star Game. He carried that same strength and determination into his years as a truck driver. A true car man through and through, he loved cars and NASCAR and never missed a race. He studied Transportation in college. Buddy was a funny, enjoyable man to be around who could make anyone laugh. He was always there to help and would give the shirt off his back for someone in need. Above all, he was a loving father and grandfather who cherished his family.

He is survived by his daughter, Abby Barnes and her husband, Donovan Barnes; grandson whom he adored so much, Mac Lishman; sisters, Barbara Talley and Martha Barta (Gary); a host of nieces, nephews, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James V. Harris, Sr. and Modena Burleson Harris; and brother-in-law, Charles Talley.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Pegues, Tupelo.

A graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. at Lee Memorial Park with Mr. Donovan Barnes, Mrs. Abby Barnes, and Mr. Mac Lishman officiating. Pegues Funeral Directors have been entrusted with the care of his arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Bill Ethridge, Brandon Ethridge, Scotty Ethridge, John McFarling, Joey McFarling, and Neal Turner.

Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Thomason and John Parker. 

The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the staff at Sanctuary Hospice House, with special thanks to Angel at Home Hospice nurse, for their compassionate care.
