TUPELOJames Carl Long, 88, died Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born October 5, 1917, in Lee County to James William and Mattie Wood Long. He attended Birmingham Ridge School and graduated from Cedar Hill High School in 1936. He graduated from Draughns Business College. He was a World War II Veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Monrovia in the Pacific Theater.

Mr. Long was employed at Kings Grocery, Commercial Distributors, and Investors Diversified Services before entering the motel business in the early 1950s. He formerly owned the Carro Motel, Village Inn, and Days Inn in Tupelo. He was past president of the Mississippi Hotel-Motel Association and Tupelo Innkeepers Association. He was Mississippi Innkeeper of the Year in 1986. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tupelo, where he taught the 10-year old boys class for many years. He was a member of the Bill Elmore Sunday School Class. He also served the church as a trustee and chairman of the deacons. He was a 50-year member and past president of the Tupelo Lions Club.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Tupelo with Dr. Gayle Alexander, Rev. Rick Ball, and Rev. Rickey Young officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. W.E. Pegues is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his daughter, Gayle Wicker and husband, Roger, of Tupelo; three grandchildren, Margaret Wicker of Washington, D.C., Caroline Wicker and McDaniel Wicker, both of University, Mississippi; his brother, Philip Long of Tupelo; his sister, Mary Ruth Easterling of the Birmingham Ridge Community; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Gayle McDaniel Long, on January 15, 1994; his brother, Murray Long; and an infant daughter.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Jimmy Long, Tommy Long, Don Long, Robert Long, Bill Easterling, Gary Easterling, David Welch, and Gray Swoope.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Bill Elmore Sunday School Class.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and 10 a.m. until service time at the church.
