Gill Simmons, age 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. He was born on June 4, 1934, in Saltillo to Josh and Bertha Simmons. He grew up in Saltillo and graduated from Saltillo High School.

Gill Simmons married Sara Ruth Miller on August 17, 1958, and together they built a life filled with love and family. They were married for over 67 years. He was a devoted father to his children. His love, guidance, and support shaped their lives in countless ways.

Gill services in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged. Gill was a long time employee of the Community Federal Savings and Loan (Merchant and Farmer’s Bank) after serving for 44 years. He served faithfully on the Boards of Tombigbee Electric and Itawamba Community College (lastly serving as the Board President in 2022). He was a long-time member of the Tupelo Luncheon Civitan organization. He coached youth baseball for years and founded and coached the Tupelo Sunsets girl’s youth softball team. He was one of the founders of the Gardner Simmons Home for Girls which served to foster girls in North Mississippi for many years. He served as a Deacon at Harrisburg Baptist Church for years.

Gill will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

He is survived by his son, Marcus Gill Simmons; daughter, Dana Denise Haguewood (Scott); granddaughters, Simmons Renee Haadsma (David) and Sara Scott Harrelson (Austin); and great-grandchildren, David Kent Haadsma III, Miller Louise Haadsma, and George Scott Haadsma.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Josh and Bertha Simmons; brothers, Milton Simmons, Sterling Simmons; twin, Bill Simmons; sisters, Nadine Jones, Jo Ann Newman, Janette Arnold, Dorothy Smith, Betty Westmorland; and daughter, Robin Renee Simmons.

Visitation will be 1 p.m. until service time Thursday, January 8, 2026, at Pegues, Tupelo.

Services honoring the life of Mr. Gill Simmons will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday, January 8, 2026, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of Pegues with Dr. Forrest Sheffield officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Memorial Park.

Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Tupelo Sunsets.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the M. G. Simmons Ability to Succeed Scholarship at Itawamba Community College, 602 W. Hill St., Fulton, MS 38843, or Parkgate Pregnancy Clinic, 150 S. Industrial Road, Tupelo, MS 38801.
