George F. Maynard, Jr.

Tupelo - George F. Maynard, Jr., 90, died March 26, 2011 at the Sanctuary Hospice House. He was born on October 6, 1920, in Tupelo, Mississippi, the son of George F. and Margaret Bonner Maynard. He graduated from Tupelo High School and attended the University of Mississippi. During his career, he was a buyer for Anderson Clayton Cotton Company in Tupelo, the former owner of University Sporting Goods in Oxford and also served as Assistant Director of the Tupelo Art Museum.
He was a decorated member of the US Air Force during WWIII. He served with distinction as a bombardier on a B-24 Liberator in the South Pacific from April 1942 October 1945. He flew 49 missions while assigned to the 13th Air Force and 5th Bomb Group., 23rd Bomb Squadron. He was awarded an Air Medal with 8 Silver-Bronze Leaf, Asiatic-Pacific Medal with 3 Battle Stars and the American Campaign Medal with 3 Stars.
He served on the Tupelo Park and Recreation Board during tremendous growth in the 60s and he was awarded a Silver Beaver by the Yocona Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the St. James Catholic Church.
The Funeral Mass of Resurrection will be held at 12 noon, Tuesday, March 29, at St. James Catholic Church with a reception following in the Fellowship Hall. A private graveside service will be at Glenwood Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of almost 65 years, Shirley Russell Maynard of Tupelo, one son, George F. Maynard III (Crissy) of Greenville, South Carolina; two grandchildren, George F. Bo Maynard, IV (Elizabeth) of Memphis, TN and Benjamin H. Maynard (Jessica) both of Orlando, Florida; two great-grandchildren, Luke Carter Maynard and Sophie Belle Maynard both of Orlando, Florida; one sister, Sarah Maynard Kelly of Rochester, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death two sisters, Margaret Baker and Molly Burd; one brother, Robert Maynard.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. 12 p.m. on Tuesday at the St. James Catholic Church.
