FRED A. SMITH

Tupelo - Fred A. Smith, 88, died Wednesday, September 7, 2005, at the Homeplace Retirement Home in Saltillo after a lengthy illness. A Ripley native, he was born February 13, 1918 to the late Hugh Alexander and Martha Etta Dunham Smith. His wife, Mattie Thornton Smith, preceded him in death, April 21, 2004. He was retired with the Tupelo Water and Light Department after many years of service. As a longtime member of East Heights Baptist Church, he served as deacon and also taught in the mens Bible school class for a number of years. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid gardener.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Terry Ledbetter officiating. Burial will be in Tippah Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include one daughter, Dianne Edge of Mooreville; five sons, Stan Smith of Portage, Michigan, Terry Smith of Keller, Texas, Freddy Smith of Hattiesburg, Mickey Smith of Houston, Texas, and Tim Smith of Masa, Arizona; one sister, Martha Evelyn Holliday of Ripley; 14 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five sisters, Hildreth Dees, Lula Hugh, Kathleen Ledbetter, Jamie Conner, Anna Fay Smith ; two brothers, Enoch and Herman Smith; and one grandson, Jeff Smith.

Pallbearers will be members of his Church and Sunday school class.

Visitation will be Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until service time in the Chapel at W. E. Pegues
