Saltillo – Charlotte Jane Horton Coggins, 93, went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 24, 2026. She was born October 8, 1932, to the late Charlie and Ervie Horton in the Unity Community of Lee County. Charlotte had a servant’s heart and served her family and others faithfully. She was an only child and grew up in Unity with many cousins that she loved as siblings. She and her husband Archie Coggins moved to Saltillo in 1967 with her parents and their two children.
She was a hard worker and worked at Hunter Sadler Co. until 1976, when she left to care for her aging mother. After her grandchildren were born, Charlotte started to keep children in her home. She became known as Miss Charlotte that lived in the big house behind the post office. She kept many children from the area and loved them as her own. She was known for great food, cakes, and her love for her animals. Miss Charlotte’s kids were raised on spaghetti, black-eyed peas, potato patties, cup cakes, and knowing not to slam the back door. In her free time she made and sold cakes and was well known for her moist cakes and tasty icing.
In her later years she cared for her ailing husband while continuing to keep a few children and spent time with her great-grandchildren. She was thrilled when the great-grandchildren started to arrive and enjoyed watching them in all of their activities. She never missed giving each family member a birthday card, even if it was a few days late because she had to find the card. She loved being a member and serving God at her church, Saltillo Methodist church.
Miss Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Coggins; and her son, Charles “Buddy” Coggins.
She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Smith (Mike) and her daughter-in-law, Nell Coggins of Saltillo; four grandchildren, Renee Parrish(Ashley), Kerry Slagowitz (Douglas), Brad Coggins (Ragan), Brandy Allen (Cliff); eight great-grandchildren, Katelyn Sandlin, Kennedy Sandlin, Justin (Haley) Sandlin, Aaron, Dain, and Lake Slagowitz, Gray and Mara Coggins; one great-great-grandchild, Preslie Sandlin. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, her dear friend Joyce Ann Franks, and her friend and care-giver Dee Jones.
We would like to give a special thank you to the Gentiva Hospice nurses and caregivers that have helped care for her in the last few months.
Visitation will be from 12 p.m. until service time Monday, April 27, 2026, at Saltillo Methodist Church.
