Bob H. Smith

Mooreville- Bobby Harlon Smith departed this life on the evening of October 1, 2025, at his home in Mooreville, Mississippi. He was born in Lee County to Oscar and Erma Langston Smith on February 3, 1932. He received his education in Lee County and Tupelo School Districts. He attended Itawamba Community College and Freed Hardeman University in Henderson, Tennessee.

Bob served his country faithfully in the US military. At an early age he experiences the horrors of war by serving in the Korean Conflict. He later served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War. He retired from the United States Marine Corp after 25 years of service in 34 different countries around the world. He attained the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. During his career he received several decorations and commendations for his service.

Bob is survived by his wife, Dr. Jean Chittom Smith; beloved step-son, Leonard Bedna Schaefer, III and his wife, Melissa Gordon Schaefer; sisters, Sarah Smith of Tupelo and Nancy McGee (Gene) of Murfreesboro. Tennessee; brother-in-law, Harry Cowan of Baldwyn; sister-in-law, Janice Chittom McKinney of Cottondale, Alabama; several nieces and nephews; extended family; friend and beloved physician, Dr. Noel Garcia; and special friend and care taker, Donna McCarter of New Albany.

Preceding him in death are his parents; sister, Mary Nell Millwood and her husband, Ed; sister, Barbara Cowan; brother, Joe Dan Smith; infant brother, Charles; faithful brother-in-law, Robert Earl McKinney; faithful and trusted military comrade, Charles Ralph Maroney and his wife, Diane Briesch Marony of Raeford, North Carolina.

Visitation will be 1 p.m. until service time Saturday, October 4, 2025, on the pavilion at Oak Grove Cemetery.

A graveside service with military honors will be 2 p.m. Saturday, October 4, 2025, at Oak Grove Cemetery with Dan Rupert, U.S. Air Force, Retired conducting the service.

Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Earl Gordon, Harry Cowan, Gene McGee, Doug Wallace, and Bill Martin.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, or the charity of your choice.
