Ann Hussey

Mooreville - Ann Sheffield Hussey was born on August 19, 1943, to Franklin “Todd” and Corene Stovall Sheffield, at the Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi, and passed away into the welcoming arms of Jesus on Wednesday, July 16, 2025. Ann was the youngest of three children and was a part of a wonderful and loving home, which consisted of her parents, her two older sisters, and her Stovall grandparents. She and her family were active members of Bethel Baptist Church, where she was saved as a young lady. As she would say, she lived in “downtown Dorsey” and was always so glad to tell you that her grandfather donated the property for Dorsey School, where her education began. After her time at Dorsey, she attended Itawamba Agricultural High School, where she was a 1961 graduate. She was always an outgoing person who never met a stranger and always enjoyed the high school dances and socials. She was voted “Best Personality” during her time at IAHS.

After graduation from high school, Ann furthered her education at Itawamba Junior College and was always so happy to tell you that her uncle was the founder and first president. While at IJC, she was an Indianette and a cheerleader, and some of her fondest memories centered around those days on both of those squads. Regarding her career choice, she followed in the footsteps of so many in her family and pursued an education degree at Mississippi State University. She was, as she said, raised to be a Bulldog, and she was an avid MSU fan, and always said that some of the best years of her life were spent in Starkville. She completed her education in 1964 and also married the love of her life Kenneth Hussey on November 20, 1964.

Ann began her teaching career at Fulton Grammar School and taught there from academic years 1965-66 through 1968-69. She was selected by Mr. Glen Loden to be in the inaugural group of teachers to work with the Head Start Program in the Summer of 1965. She had fond memories of her first classes at Fulton Grammar School and all of her students, who fondly referred to her as Mrs. Ann. She came to Mooreville in the academic year of 1969-70 because her marriage to Kenneth brought her to the ancestral Hussey property. She and Kenneth built their first house just in time for the birth of their first daughter Andrea Dawn on June 3, 1967. The family lived happily in one of the first split-level homes in the area. The family made the next welcome addition on September 3, 1976, with the birth of Amanda Rae. With two children and a desire to have more area off of the highway for their children to play, they decided that they wanted to build another home off the road. There were also concerns that with advancing age, they might someday have difficulty with the stairs in the split-level home. So, she and Kenneth built the current residence and moved into the home in 1979.

Ann finished out her career at Mooreville School, and by the time she finished, she had 25 years at Mooreville and about four in Fulton totally nearly 30-year education career. With each career move, she always threw her “entire” self into the job, and wanted to watch “her babies”, as she called her students, that she taught and support them in any endeavor. So, during her tenure at Mooreville, you could often find her on the baseball field or in the gym watching a basketball game. While at Fulton, she was an avid “Indian” and, at Mooreville, she became an equally avid “Trooper”.

She and Kenneth thrived and lived and loved through the years. They enjoyed traveling and just experiencing life together. In 2009, life shifted gears yet again as they welcomed their first grandchild, Aurora Dawn, on February 13, 2009. From that point forward, life seemed to center on “raising that baby.” Sadly, Kenneth became ill with an autoimmune disorder around 2010, and his health deteriorated. They did get a few years to participate in raising their second grandchild Rianna Leigh, who was born on May 26, 2011. By about 2014, Kenneth’s health had failed so badly that life became a struggle for Ann, who eventually had to seek assistance with Kenneth’s care. He passed on to his Heavenly home on October 7, 2017. Life continued to be a struggle for Ann in those years without Kenneth. Her children and grandchildren tried to fill that unfillable void that she had without him.

She was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Fulton but was also extremely active at Andrew’s Chapel Community Church where most of her husband’s family were always greeting her with loving arms.

Survivors include her daughters, Andrea Hussey Taylor (Joe) of Mooreville, and Amanda Hussey Fowler (Lee) of Mooreville; two grandchildren, Aurora Dawn Fowler, and Rianna Leigh Fowler of Mooreville; sister-in-law, Linda Mitchell; nieces, Leigh Jarrell, Cindy Jo Warner, Rhonda McDade, Pam Mitchell Tharp and Anna-Liesa Hussey; and nephews, Mike Mitchell, Matthew Hussey and Alex McDowell. She also leaves behind a host of great nieces and nephews, who all meant so much to her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Hussey; parents, Todd and Corene Sheffield; and sisters, Joe Nell Wood, and Sheila McDowell.

Visitation will be 5 until 7 p.m. Saturday July 19, 2025, at Pegues in Tupelo.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2025, at Andrew’s Chapel Community Church with Bro. Jackie Gray and Bro. Lance Carpenter officiating and eulogy by Chad Willis. Graveside services will follow at Andrew’s Chapel Cemetery. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Mike Mitchell, Herman Hussey, Sr., Herman Hussey, Jr., Chris Hussey, Mark Pomeroy, and Rickey Cleveland.
