Anita “Nita” Jean Spencer Whaley
Saltillo – Anita “Nita” Jean Spencer Whaley passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 68 on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Iuka. Born on June 27, 1957, to Elton Ray Spencer and Catherine Prentiss Lewis, Nita’s life was filled with creativity, strength, and a deep love for her family and friends.
Nita was a Christian woman, and her faith was a quiet but meaningful part of who she was. She attended Sandy Springs Baptist Church and carried her beliefs in a way that was personal, sincere, and reflected in the care she showed to others.
She had a special gift for creating beauty with her hands. Through crocheting, quilting, and intricate needlework, Nita turned simple threads into lasting treasures. The many pieces she lovingly made over the years will continue to bring comfort and fond memories to those fortunate enough to receive them.
Nita was known for her sharp wit and spirited personality. Quick-minded and candid, she had a way of keeping conversations lively and memorable. She spoke her mind with honesty and authenticity, and those who knew her best appreciated her genuine heart and unmistakable sense of humor. With her fondness for the color red and her unmistakable presence, she carried herself with confidence and individuality. She had a natural way of filling a room — not by trying to, but simply by being herself.
Above all, Nita loved deeply, in her own unique and meaningful way. She leaves behind cherished memories of laughter, resilience, and a love that was true and enduring for those she held close.
Nita is lovingly remembered by her mother, Catherine Lewis; her three children, Ramona Kinney (Chris) of Iuka, Derek Smith of Tupelo, and Doug Whaley (Julie) of Athens, Alabama; and her grandchildren, Devin Tucker, Emma Kate Smith, Ava Rae Smith, Ella Grace Kinney, Griffin Kinney, Nolan Whaley, and Savanna Whaley. She is also survived by her siblings, Wesley Spencer of Booneville, Jimmy Spencer (Charlotte) of Booneville, Carolyn Greenhill (Jack Benny) of Baldwyn, and Jacky Spencer of Mantachie, along with a host of nieces and nephews who will continue to carry her memory in their hearts.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 32 years, Richard Whaley; her father, Elton Ray Spencer; her brother, Chester Spencer; her nephew, Jack Richard Greenhill; and her granddaughter, Destiny Tucker.
Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. until service time on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Sandy Springs Baptist Church in Fulton. A Memorial Service celebrating Nita’s life will follow at 2 p.m. with Bro. Kevin Hatfield and Bro. Billy Moody officiating.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Tan, Dr. Leeth, the staff of Tishomingo Manor, and Gentiva Hospice for the compassion, kindness, and excellent care shown during her final days.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Anita’s honor to the Sandy Springs Cemetery Fund, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or to a charity of your choice.
