Obituary for Virgil W. "Jack" Herring Saltillo - Virgil W. Jack Herring, 73, died Monday, January 9, 2012, at The Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo after an extended illness. A native of Saltillo, he was born January 14, 1938, to Robert Howard and Virgie Ovella Price Herring. He graduated from Saltillo High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963. He was elected and served two terms as Justice Court Judge in Lee County. In 1973, he served on the Finance Committee Justice Court Officers Association and served as Northern Vice President in 1976. He worked as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring after 25 years. During his postal career he served as Facilitator for Quality Work Life (QWL) for the US Postal Service Northern Area for three years. Following his retirement, he worked nine years for BancorpSouth as a courier. A 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and member of the Lee County Scottish Rite Association, he was a Past Master of the Saltillo Masonic Lodge #294. He enjoyed NASCAR and was an avid L.A. Dodgers baseball fan, and he also shared his love for the game with his community, coaching little league for nine years including the 1982 season in which he coached his team in the Dizzy Dean Little League World Series. He faithfully attended Mayfield Church of Christ. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, January 12, 2012, at Mayfield Church of Christ with Ministers Adam T. Miller, Chuck Herring and Tim Green officiating. Burial will be in Mayfield Cemetery. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Peggy Easterling Herring of Saltillo; two sons, Ken Herring (Michele) of Nesbit and Jason Herring (Angie) of Saltillo; one sister, Joyce Robison (James) of Guntown; one brother, Bobby Dale Herring (Patsy) of Germantown, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Bethanne Herring, Laiken Herring, and Jack Barton Herring, all of Saltillo, Eli Herring and Elly Herring both of Nesbit; eight nieces and nephews and ten great-nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Robert Herring, Darren Herring, Richard Herring, Terry Herring, Bill Smith, Paul Funderburk, Trent Kelly, John Estes, Brent Morse, Scott Messer, Cory Messer, Charles Vanderford, and James Adam Miller. Honorary Pallbearers will be his Bren's Coffee Shop Friends; co-workers at BancorpSouth Courier Division; and members of the Saltillo Masonic Lodge #294. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
