VELMA BYARS

Tupelo - Velma Allison Byars, 89, member of First Baptist Church, Tupelo, passed away Saturday, October 29, 2016, at the Greenhouses at Traceway. She was born in the Anchor Community on January 10, 1927, to Winifred and Ethel McQuary Lancaster. In 1947, Velma married her husband, M. B. "Buddy" Byars in Nettleton. She worked from home most of her life and enjoyed cooking and taking care of her family. At First Baptist Church in Aberdeen and Tupelo, Velma taught children's Sunday school. Velma was a very avid scrap-booker. She made them with different topics including, family, church families, gardening plants and family pets. Her other hobbies included knitting, crocheting, cross stitching, needlepoint and gardening. Velma enjoyed watching Westerns and listening to the Gaithers music.

Survivors include her son, Terry Byars (Pam) of Tupelo; granddaughters, Mary Allison Byars and Molly Anne Byars both of Tupelo; sisters, Phyllis Nelson (Oliver) and Martha Rose Smith (George) both of Houston.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, M. B. Byars and sisters, Lanelle Clemons and Patty Carolyn Lancaster.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 1, 2016, at First Baptist Church of Tupelo.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at Odd Fellows Cemetery with Rev. Ricky Young officiating. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
