Susan Herndon Russell

July 26, 1948 — June 2, 2019

Susan Herndon Russell, 70, died peacefully at her home in Tupelo on June 2, 2019 following a courageous battle with ALS (otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) for the past year.

Susan was born on July 26, 1948 in Tupelo to Robert and Winafred Herndon who both preceded her in death.  Susan graduated from Shannon High School in 1966.  After Matthew was old enough to attend school, Susan was employed by Bank of Mississippi/BancorpSouth in the Credit Card Department. She worked there for 29 years prior to her retirement on January 31, 2014.

Susan was a true movie aficionado, enjoying both classic and contemporary cinema. Susan surrounded herself with things she loved and was passionate about creating a beautiful and cozy home - where everything had its place.

Susan is survived by her son, Matthew Kimbrough of Lilburn, Georgia; three brothers, Ricky Herndon (June) of Shannon, Rodney Herndon (Shelley) of Florence, and Martin “Marty” Herndon (Margaret) of Brandon; a sister, Betty House (Clint) of Tupelo; five nieces Kim Bradley, Kathy Hammons (Will), Leigha McLendon (Nick), Mary Beth Flippen (Ryan), and Abby Herndon; four nephews Justin Herndon (Carley), Ryan Herndon (Lucy), Lance Herndon (Ashley), and Taylor Herndon; 17 great-nieces and great-nephews; and her former spouse and Matthew’s father, Larry Kimbrough of Mantachie.

At Susan’s request, no public services will be held.  A private family memorial service to celebrate Susan’s life is planned for a future date.

Donations in Susan’s memory may be made to Sanctuary Hospice House, PO Box 2177  Tupelo, MS 38803.

The family would like to thank Susan’s home health, hospice nurses and the caregivers who enabled her to remain in the home she dearly loved during her illness and until her death.
