R. Philip Long, 89, long time Tupelo business man, died Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at Tupelo Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Tupelo. Philip was born to Jim and Mattie Wood Long January 27, 1928, in the Birmingham Ridge Community. Philip served our country in the United States Navy. He was a salesman for Commercial Distributors from 1954, until he purchased the business in 1964 and worked daily until he retired to care for his wife. He was an active member of First Baptist Church, Tupelo.
Philip is survived by his sons, Don Long (Judith) and Robert Long (Kathy) of Tupelo; grandchildren, Jodi Vail (Jeff), Linsey Jenkins (Marshall), Lori Long, all of Tupelo and Kylee Long (Jason) of Van Vleet: great-grandchildren, Aidan Strickland, Alana Vail, Jacob Tackett, Avery Palmer all of Tupelo and Ryder Parks of Van Vleet; one sister in law, Betty Blissard of Saltillo. He also leaves a very special friend and caregiver, Opal Womack of Tupelo.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kitty McNutt Long; four brothers, Troy Long, Gaston Long, Murray Long and Carl Long; one sister, Mary Ruth Long Easterling.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 24, 2017, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Dr. Gayle Alexander and Bro. Rodger Smith officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Paul Poland, Tommy Bickerstaff, Mike Bannon, Jimmy Smith and Paul Creely.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday, February 23, 2017, at W. E. Pegues, Tupelo.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to First Baptist Church, Tupelo, 300 N Church St, Tupelo, MS 38804.
