Obituary for Mayo Grubbs Shannon - Mayo Grubbs, 75, died Saturday, December 3, 2011, at Sanctuary Hospice House. He was born September 14, 1936 in Shannon to T. T. and Cornelia Dye Grubbs. He was a graduate of Shannon High School. He married Betty G. Peters on December 6, 1952. In 1956, he graduated from Molar Barber College in Memphis, Tennessee and worked as a barber for many years. In 1964, he was elected Lee County Justice Court Judge and served a total of thirty-six years before retiring. He received his judicial training from the University of Alabama, the University of Colorado, the University of Nevada and the University of Mississippi. He was elected Executive Director of the Mississippi Justice Association in 1970 and authored the Mayo Manual in 1976. He was a 32nd degree Mason. He was currently a member of First Baptist Church of Shannon and previously a member of Doty Chapel where he served as music director and deacon for over fifty years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, working in his shop, talking politics, listening to gospel music and watching sports, especially the Atlanta Braves and the Ole Miss Rebels. Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at First Baptist Church of Shannon with Rev. Phillip Box and Rev. Bill Adams officiating. Burial will be in Doty Chapel Cemetery. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include two sons, Terry M. Grubbs and Randy J. Grubbs (Patricia); six grandchildren, Jennifer Grubbs, Michael Grubbs and Maegan Grubbs, all of Shannon, Anthony Knight (Teresa) of Verona, Tracye Nance (Brian) of Tupelo and John Knight of Amory; four great grandchildren, Bailey and Tanner Nance of Tupelo and Landon and Lindley Knight of Verona; two brothers, F.T. Grubbs (Opal) of Atlanta, Georgia and Jerry Grubbs (Debra) of Shannon; his sister-in-law, Shirley Hawkins of Nettleton; his brothers-in-law, Ray Peters (Sue), Rex Peters (Evelle), Gary Peters (Anna), Jerry Peters (Judy), Danny Joe Peters (Kathy); special friend and caregiver, Peggy Jackson; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his son, Ricky Eugene Grubbs, his grandson, Terry M. Grubbs, Jr; his daughter-in-law, Nell Grubbs; his sister, Dorothy Harper; his sister-in-law, Ruby Joyce Barnett; his parents-in-law, John and Wilma Peters. Pallbearers will be James Oswalt, Mike Bray, Barry Garrett, Phil Gann, Tom Lyles, Jamey Burrow and John Sheffield. Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Monday, December 5, 2011 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sanctuary Hospice House, in memory of Mayo Grubbs, P.O. Box 2177, Tupelo, Miss 38803.
