LUCILLE GUNTER

Tupelo - Lucille Gunter, 92, life-long Lee County native, passed away Friday, December 23, 2016 at Pontotoc Nursing Home. She was born in the Palmetto Community on November 21, 1924 to Edward R. and Lovie Dell Crum West. When she was 18, Lucille worked in the office of a ship yard in Mobile, Alabama, during WWII. On December 24, 1946, she married the love of her life, James C. Gunter. She worked in the family business, Gunter's Food Store. Lucille was a devoted wife and mother, and was most proud of working from home, raising her children. She was a devout Christian and was a member of West Jackson Street Baptist Church for over 40 years. Her ministry in life, other than taking care of her family, was to visit the homebound.

A celebration of Lucille's life will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with visitation from 11 a.m. until service time. Graveside services will follow in Lee Memorial Park.

Survivors include her children, Kriss Springer (Guy) of Pontotoc, James C. Gunter, Jr. (Beverly) of Pontotoc, Philip Gunter (Brenda) of Tupelo and Angie Thornton (Jeff) of Pontotoc; grandchildren, Rachel Wood (J. D.) of Tupelo, Courtney Maxey (Jeremy) of Pontotoc, Shannon Gunter (Dionne) of Pontotoc, Wesley Gunter of Pontotoc, Ashley Martin (Rusty) of Saltillo, Andrea Estrada (Ricardo) of Tupelo, April Kelly Farris (Eric) of the Furrs Community and Kyle Thornton (Jordyn) of Oxford; sister-in-law, Emma Lee Harrison of Tupelo; 12 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James C. Gunter; sister, Dorothy Pearson (Ralph); brother, Herman West (Frances); sister-in-law, Virginia Sheffield (A. R. "Russell"); brother-in-law, Charles Harrison.

Pallbearers will be Shannon Gunter, Wesley Gunter, Kyle Thornton, Dylan Gunter, Wyatt Gunter, Rusty Martin. Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie West, Mark Sheffield and Jeff O'Quinn.

Memorials may be made to West Jackson Street Baptist Church, 1349 W Jackson Street, Tupelo, MS 38801.
