JOSEPHINE C. McVAYTupelo - Josephine C. McVay, 95, died Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at North Mississippi Medical Center, Hospice. She and her twin brother, Joseph were born May 11, 1922 in Plantersville to Argyle Columbus and Carrie McDole McVay. She was the last survivor of her sibling group. After graduating from Mooreville High School in 1941, she worked for a local dentist, Dr. E. D. Foster. Josephine also worked for Ms. Velma Stewart at the North Mississippi Community Hospital and High's Insurance Agency as a stenographer. After WWII she moved to Washington DC and worked for the Department of the Army, Quartermaster General. After returning to Tupelo, she began her 35 year career with the Internal Revenue Service. She worked for Mr. Ralph Perry for many years, when it was only a two-person office. Ms. McVay has been a member of the First Presbyterian Church since moving from Plantersville to Tupelo. She was a member of the Pilot Club, holding the office of President of the local chapter twice. She was also a member of Chapter 1369, National Association of Retired Federal Employees. After retirement, Josephine volunteered at the Lee County Library and the Oren Dunn Museum. Ms. McVay was a lover of animals and always had a special dog or cat as a companion, beginning with her first dog, Revenuer and finally her beloved cat, Hillary.Josephine McVay is survived by her sister-in-law, Rena Foster McVay (Edgar, dec.); nieces, Genell McVay Easterling, Sue McVay Kirk (James, dec.), Opal McVay Moore (John, dec.), Joey Donaldson (Cliff, dec.), Linda McVay, Betty Cummings (Jeff), Kathy Swaggerty and Pam Green (Gary, dec.);  niece-in-law, Carol McVay (David, dec.); nephews, William "Bill" McVay (Kelly), Paul McVay, Pat Swaggerty (Barbara), and Clay Swaggerty (Doris); dedicated great-niece and caregiver, Cindy McVay Leach; dedicated great-nephew, Jason McVay and many more great-nieces and nephews; great-great-nieces and nephews and special caregiver, Deborah Shackelford.She was preceded in death by her parents, Argyle and Carrie (McDole) McVay; sisters, Mildred McVay and Martha Swaggerty (Frank); brothers, William Zadoc McVay (Gereed), Edgar McVay and her twin, Joseph McVay (Letty); half-sisters, Mae McVay, Laura Westmorland; and half-brothers, Grover, Robert "Bob" and Herman Cleveland "Clee" McVay.
A committal service will be 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 with visitation one hour prior to service time in McFadden Hall.Expressions of sympathy may be left at www.peguesfuneralhome.com .
