James “Jim” M. Carter

James Mayo Carter, 79, of Huntsville died Tuesday, March 21, 2023. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Francis Carter, Sr., mother, Geraldine Mayo Carter, and brother, Thomas Francis Carter, Jr. He is survived by his wife, the former Anna Monette Allen; children, Christi Leigh Carter Houston of Farmersville, TX, James Mayo Carter, Jr. of Saltillo, MS, and Jonathan Allen Carter of Huntsville; grandchildren, Alexis Presley, Blake Houston, Cooper Carter, Lane Carter, Ragon Carter, and Collins Carter; and nephew, Thomas Francis Carter III.

Mr. Carter graduated from Mississippi State University and was commissioned in the United States Army in 1965, where he served with great distinction for more than 20 years, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Among his many awards were the Legion of Merit (with Oak Leaf) and the Meritorious Service Medal (with Oak Leaf). Additionally, he received the Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medals for actions in Vietnam. He also served in Korea, Taiwan, and Germany and commanded several varied units, including a Mechanized Infantry Company, an Air Defense Missile Battery, a Nuclear-Weapons Delivery Unit, and the largest Company-sized unit in the US Army. He was selected to be the Senior Aide-De-Campe to the Commanding General, 7th Infantry Division in the Republic of Korea. Additionally, as a Captain, he served as a Battalion Executive Officer in Vietnam. He was attached to the US Embassy in Taipei, Taiwan as the Senior Missile Depot Advisor. He graduated from the US Army Command and General Staff College in 1976 and received a Master’s Degree from the University of Southern California in 1982. After retiring from the Army in 1985, Mr. Carter had a distinguished career in the Military Defense Industry as a Senior Systems Analyst.

Graveside services with full Military Honors will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 15, 2023, at Tupelo Memorial Park. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
