Jack Harbin

January 22, 1933 — April 30, 2019

James V. "Jack" Harbin, 86, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2019, at his residence. A native and life-long resident of Tupelo, he was born January 22, 1933, to Clarence Velton and Audie Tucker Harbin. For 27 years, he served his community as a firefighter with the Tupelo Fire Department before retiring as Captain in 1996. Throughout his working life and also after retirement from the fire department, Jack operated a small engine repair business. On his 23rd birthday, he met Olean Brooks who he later married on June 28, 1956. He loved telling the story about her being the best birthday present he ever received.

Jack was devoted to his family and his faith. He had a passion for working in his yard and enjoyed joking around, especially with his fellow firefighters. Stories of his shenanigans are still fondly remembered and often shared within the community. Jack was a genuinely happy man and his smile could brighten the darkest of days. His kind heart and fun-loving personality left a lasting imprint in the hearts of those who met him. He was a long-time active member of Priceville Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Olean Brooks Harbin of Tupelo; two children, Shirley Stevens and her husband, Mark of Southaven and Terry Harbin and his wife, Angel of Tupelo; four grandchildren, Jennifer Stevens Reynolds and her husband, Sam of Lakeland, Tennessee, Justin Stevens and his wife, Amanda of Olive Branch, Sidney Jack Harbin of Birmingham, Alabama and Peyton Harbin of Nashville, Tennessee; two great-grandchildren, Maddie and Ben Reynolds of Lakeland; and numerous special nieces and nephews.
