GWEN GARRETT Tupelo- Joyce Gwendolyn Morgan Garrett, 82, passed away Friday, June 17th, 2016, at North Mississippi Medical Center.  She was born January 20, 1934, in Tupelo to Fermon and Eula Morgan.  Gwen graduated from Tupelo High School in 1951.  She then attended Wood Junior college where she met her husband, Gene Garrett.  They later attended Mississippi State together where she earned her Bachelors and later her Masters degree in Education.  She taught throughout the Tupelo Public School District and Lee County for over 30 years.  She also taught piano for many years.  After retiring, she enjoyed traveling, reading, flower gardening and walking at the mall.  She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Tupelo where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and played piano and organ. Visitation will be 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Saturday, June 18, 2016 at W.E. Pegues in Tupelo. Service will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 19, 2016 at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev. Fred Britton, Senior Pastor at First United Methodist Church in Tupelo officiating. A graveside service will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, Fermon Morgan and Eula Edith White Morgan of Auburn. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Gene Garrett,  of Tupelo; daughters Adelia Garrett of Fulton and Carolyn Matthews (Marten) of Tupelo; son, Gary Garrett (Kellye) of Booneville; seven grandchildren, Hannah Macaw (Justin) and Calista Houdek of Boise, Idaho, Garrett and Brooke Matthews of Tupelo, Mollie Brown, Olivia and Gracen Garrett of Booneville. Pallbearers will be Joe Estes, Bill Morgan, Robert Sewell, Ryan Sewell, Tommy White, and Bob Young. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Research Hospital at stjude.org  or 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Expressions of sympathy may be left at www.peguesfuneralhome.com
