ELSIE McCOY HARTGRAVES BORNMAN



Tupelo - With her family by her side, Elsie Bornman went gently "into that good night" on Monday, November 20, 2017 at North Mississippi Medical Center Baldwyn Nursing Facility.


Elsie McCoy Hartgraves Bornman was born in Laurel on December 16, 1918 to the late Lorenzo Dow and Lucy Duvall McCoy. She attended Belhaven College and the University of Mississippi, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics and was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. In 1943 she married Capt. Ralph Hartgraves, who was killed in action in Normandy during WWII. In 1964 she married the late Edgar Fitzclarence Bornman of Clarksdale.



For over 20 years Mrs. Bornman taught fifth grade in Clarksdale. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling, needlework, reading, crossword puzzles and membership in the Clarksdale Woman's Club and St. Paul's Methodist Church.



In 2009 Mrs. Bornman moved to Tupelo, made new friends, joined First Presbyterian Church and, most of all, enjoyed living near her family. She was very proud of her grandsons and adored her great-grandchildren.



Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 25, 2017 in Tupelo Memorial Park with Reverend Ron Richardson officiating. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.



Mrs. Bornman's survivors include her daughter, Lou Ann Hartgraves McCarty and husband Leroy; grandsons, Dr. Pearce McCarty and wife Lisa of Minneapolis and Dr. Richmond McCarty and wife Emily of Tupelo; six great-grandchildren: Elle, Max and Piper McCarty of Minneapolis and Dow, Rhodes and Henry Hartgraves McCarty of Tupelo; two sisters, Ann McCoy Rice of Diamondhead and Dorothy McCoy Vance of Grenada, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Bornman has three step-daughters, Mary Bornman Anderson of Clinton, Virginia Bornman Burrell and husband Sammy of Meridian and Peggy Bornman Kaufman of South Carolina.



Her siblings who are deceased include L. D. McCoy, Jr., Virginia McCoy Bonds and Glenn Edward McCoy.



Mrs. Bornman's family is grateful to her devoted caregiver, Brenda Wood, and to the caring staff of NMMC Baldwyn Nursing Facility.
